Engineering Machining Technology
SFCC’s Engineering Machining Technology program will equip you with the machining tools and machine tool technology required to solve basic design-related problems. You’ll learn the theory and practice of machining and manufacturing, from tooling operations and safety to layout, planning, programming, engineering design methodology, and process improvement. You’ll also study CNC training, including CAD/CAM education—computer-aided drawing/modeling and computer-aided manufacturing.
The program gives you the opportunity to focus on distinct career paths in the field, with nested certificates in General Engineering Technologies and Manufacturing Engineering Technologies.
The Certificate in Engineering Machining Technology requires 41 credit hours of technical training, while the Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Machining Technology requires 41 credits of technical training and 21 credits of general education courses.
Machinists earn an annual median salary of $44,420, and mechanical engineering technicians can earn, on average, $77,511 a year.
Scholarships
You can apply for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Cohort to receive training at the national lab, which will cover your tuition, fees, books, and class time. You can also apply for the Gene Haas Scholarship, which offers full-time students $500 per semester and part-time students $300 per semester to be used for tuition, fees and required books and tools.

Need Help?
Part-time students (6-11 credits) can receive a scholarship of $300 per semester, and full-time students (12 or more credits) can receive $500. New students are eligible, and continuing students must maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.5. In addition, students must:
- declare a major in the Engineering Machining Technology AAS
- be New Mexico residents
- file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Dreamers Financial Aid Application
The Gene Haas Scholarship can be combined with other scholarship options like the Opportunity Scholarship and the Lottery Scholarship.

Students accepted into the cohort will receive LANL support during their education at SFCC. The LANL cohort will attend classes on campus Monday through Thursday and participate in a machining technologies internship at LANL on Fridays.
LANL Cohort Eligibility Requirements
- Enrolled as majoring in Engineering Machining Technology
- Test scores

- Accuplacer: at least 247 on reading portion, 253 on writing portion and 233 on quantitative reasoning/algebra/ statistics portion, OR
- ACT: at least 16 on the math portion, and 19 on the reading and writing portion, OR
- SAT: at least 240 on the reading portion and 440, on the math
AND - WorkKeys level score of at least 3 on Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents tests. WorkKeys assessment is required when available.
- Applicants may be required to submit additional assessment results as part of the application process. If additional assessments are required, SFCC will contact applicants with more information.

Benefits of LANL support
Students who qualify and are accepted into the LANL cohort will receive the following benefits, provided by LANL:
- Tuition and fees for a full-time student
- Paid student internship at LANL, which will meet on Fridays
- Student/intern pay while physically in class (based on standard SFCC contact hours),
- Initiation of the security clearance process, and
- Potential conversion to full-time employment upon completion of the 62 credit hour program, providing the student meets all LANL eligibility requirements.
Additional LANL requirements
- 3.0 GPA (From High School or College ONLY IF existing student)
- Current resume
- Maintain eligibility in LANL student program while enrolled in SFCC program
- Register at SFCC as full-time student (12 to 18 credit hours)
- Eligible for Q-level DOE security clearance, which requires US citizenship except in very rare circumstances generally not present in this program.
- Pass Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing (no drug use in the past 12 months)
- Pass Background Check
- Attend SFCC full-time for four semesters (fall and spring) and complete the Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Machining Technologies (62 credits) with a 3.0 GPA as determined by SFCC academic process.
- If offered a conversion to full-time employment by Los Alamos National Laboratory after successfully completing the program, commit to LANL employment for no less than 3 years. Failure to fulfill this commitment may result in the repayment of tuition and fees.
